Fermented foods seem to be a healthy living staple, even if we don’t consciously eat them, the vast majority of us have heard of them, but have you heard of fermented skincare? No? Well neither had I! So, I was super excited to try a totally new range of skincare called FLORENA Fermented Skincare, the first ever natural skincare brand devoted to fermentation. Let me delve a little deeper to give you the low down.
I know from being in the skincare industry for over 20 years, trends come and go, however the global desire for natural “clean skincare” has never gone away and is only increasing, with a huge amount of skincare aficionados feeling natural is important and has genuine benefits, both to us and obviously the planet. We want more from our skincare, we want science and we don’t want to be concerned about its potential impact on our health, as well as the growing concern of looking after our planet. Firstly I hear you, many natural beauty brands are, shall we say “lacking” in results and science, yes I get it, however natural can be scientific.
FLORENA Fermented Skincare are taking naturals to a different level, no one has tried fermentation when it comes to a skincare range.
So, firstly from what I understand the fermentation process is time intensive and not a simple one! The process enhances the ingredients antioxidant properties by 10 times(!) and also enriches the formulas with omega fatty acids. We know both of these are amazing for the skin.
To give you an idea
Fermented Olive Oil contains 10X the antioxidants compared to non-fermented olive oil (and more than skincare hero Argan oil). It also packs 50X more omega fatty acids to really nourish the skin.
FLORENA Fermented Skincare use carefully selected flowers and oils (when you smell their products you immediately get the beautiful scent) to target specific skincare needs. So, rather than the full product being fermented, select ingredients are individually fermented and added to the formula. These include fermented Jasmin, Angelica Oil and Safflower Oils.
Did you know in Ayurvedic practice that Jasmine flowers are prescribed to soften and smooth the skin!
Natural fermenting agents and micro-organisms are added to these key ingredients which kickstarts the fermentation process.
The mixture is left to ferment without any intervention, to let science and nature do its thing. Once ready, the solution is filtered to keep only the key fermented parts.
The fermented actives are then added to the other natural ingredients.
Ok, so I know when it comes to a skincare brand, it’s really helpful to know what their key ethos is; where are they coming from and is it a brand that you might be happy using? So here is a quick overview for you.
FLORENA Fermented Skincare’s formulations – They wanted to create a science based skincare range, hence the fermentation process to increase the antioxidant benefits of each product, I suppose it’s a bit like super-charging the plants and they only use natural fragrances.
COSMOS Natural (soil association) certified – This is a global natural skincare certification, with really high standards.
Vegan – No animal or animal derived ingredients.
Green packaging – The jars are made from 97.5% recycled plastic, which is also recyclable. The paper of the boxes are a minimum 70% recycled.
The jars used weigh only 7g, which is 6X lighter than most other brands, so you can save the equivalent of 3X 500g bottles per jar. There is also a huge CO2 cost globally of transporting and flying products around the world by their weight.
FLORENA Fermented Skincare have kept it to a simple but effective; cleanse, tone, moisturise, oil routine, with the option of 2 masks. The moisturisers are divided into two categories to suit your needs – hydrating and anti-ageing.
The products have been developed with all skin types in mind, formulated with gentle but powerful ingredients and without any nasties that might irritate skin. They are not targeting what I would call skin issues or tricky skins, so it’s not for your acne prone or those who want big hitting anti-ageing results. However, for those aged between 20 – 50 (obviously not exclusively) who love their naturals this is definitely worth a try.
The scents are SOOO beautiful, like stand out stunning, which makes the products a real luxury to use. For those who want hydration, who enjoy the experience of using skincare, who appreciate beautiful products that don’t cost the world (these are really reasonably priced between £6 and £25) and want to up their natural skincare game then FLORENA Fermented Skincare is for you.
FLORENA Fermented Skincare Anti-Wrinkle Day Cream – it’s rich, beautiful and keeps my skin feeling plump most of the day.
FLORENA Fermented Skincare Illuminating Facial Oil – it’s just beautiful to use. I use it to massage with and also apply it in the evening after my other active serums. Top tip – you can include a few drops of this in your moisturiser to get the best of both!
