Age & Your Skin

We all age, it is a beautiful aspect of the natural cycle of life, how we do this is an individual, personal journey, one that we all at some point must embrace.

As we age the natural cycle of cell renewal in the epidermis slows down, from 28 days to 45 – 50 by the time we are in our sixties, contributing to our skin looking less radiant as we mature. From the age of 23 our sin is already starting it’s degenerative process with the visible signs becoming noticeable by the age of 30

There are two aspects of ageing, intrinsic, these are internal factors in our body such as DNA, hereditary health and the natural passing of time. Extrinsic factors are often to blame for premature ageing these are from our environment such as sunlight, pollution, smoking, alcohol, poor nutrition, disease, harsh cosmetics and synthetic ingredients.

Our skin health and appearance is a direct result of many of those extrinsic factors, medical research has shown a healthy lifestyle will reduce the visible effects of pre-mature ageing. This is directly related to what we consume, and do to our body throughout our life. There are a number of ageing process that with time happen naturally, how we look after our skin and bodies has an impact as to the rate of these visible effects.

Some skin aging functions that will happen to us all

Dryness  By the age of 30 oil gland production begins to reduce and will continue to do so over the years

Sun damage The effects of sun exposure in our youth does not become fully visible for many years after the damage is done. In our 30’s – 40’s melanocytes begin to burn out reducing the skins ability to fight off UV rays and can cause uneven pigmentation.

Skin Thinning From the age of 40 the dermis and the subcutaneous lower layers of the skin begin to thin, the skin begins to sag, loose it’s plumpness and firmness, also making the skin more fragile.

Loss of firmness Cells called fibroblasts within the dermis, continually replenish the collagen and elastin, these loose their ability to function.

Reduced immune response Langerhan cells reduce, these are receptors for the immune system, reducing our natural barrier from external and internal damage.

Reduced damage repair Over time the body looses it’s ability to naturally repair free radical damage, accelerating the ageing process.

Temperature control  Sweat glands lose their ability to function correctly making body temperature harder to regulate.

All is not lost,  This is where Abigail's philosophy of the trio of youth is your key to warding off the these effects for as long as possible and in term enhancing your life in a healthy enjoyable way.
